Separatly, I received a visually pleasing book called Saved by the Well. The book is part of the Dream Village project, that uses picture books and a website to help children explore and address global issues. Nothing happens by coincidence and so in celebration of World Water Day I offer a review of A Dream Village Story’s Saved by the Well by Matthew Eisenberg and Suneet Bhatt.

Saved by the Well gently tells the story of a town called Spontania in Mozambique. Spontania grew larger and larger and the one well dried up because of the increased demand for water. Without the well people either walked for miles to get clean water or drank dirty water. The town suffered, until that is, a play pump was built near the towns school.

Told through a combination of photographs and cartoons, the book is well thought out, informative and beautiful. I particularly like the photographs. The story line is easy enough for younger children to grasp but can still spark conversation amongst older readers. My second grader breezed through the book but had questions after. It was a great tool in getting her to think about basic life necessities, to which not everyone has access.

I not only enjoyed the book but am enjoying the website as well. I encourage everyone to check the website out and to support this wonderful start-up by purchasing their products.

Now that we have used the products for more than 30 days I am going to share our experience.

I was super excited to see the Princess and the Frog. The debut of Disney’s first African-American princess had myself and my oldest daughter all a glow with anticipation. When I got the email (yes I subscribe to Carol’s Daughter for updates so should you!) I went and got the new products. Alana really likes the purple flower/rose shaped scrubber that came with the initial offering of the Magical Beauty Collection. She also like the names of each; The Beauty Within, Inner Shine and Sharing Means Caring, Alana commented that the names really made her feel like a Princess. She thanked me everyday for about a week for getting her the gift set. We went through it pretty quickly because she wanted to use it always!

The products (bubble bath, shampoo and conditioner) are easy to use, do not cause any teary eyes and really work. I am particularly impressed with the conditioner which leaves everybody’s hair super soft and manageable, which in my house is no easy task. My daughters have very different hair textures, but both need moisture. I typically have to buy different products for each not only because of age but because, what works really well in Asherah’s hair will most probably weigh Alana’s down after a few uses. The Carol’s Daughter conditioner works on both heads and there is no flaky residual for Alana.

Carol’s Daughter has created a great product and given it a really classy look which makes all of our little princesses feel special.

I received an email today from the Customer Service Department at KidZui regarding my complaint that Poker was an inappropriate game for children. Their response was swift and generous. I am pleased with the manner in which they handled the situation. Below is the letter they sent me.

Hello,

Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. We sincerely apologize that you found this game to be inappropriate for your child. The decision to feature it was based on its inclusion within a variety of children’s gaming sites. However, we take these matters very seriously and will make sure to have our editorial team re-review the game and verify that it meets our safety guidelines.

In the meantime we have extended a complimentary 3 month KidZui paid membership to your account. Along with other membership benefits, this will give you the ability to block this specific game. To do so please follow these instructions:

Please go to www.kidzui.com and click on the “Login” link in the upper-right corner. Next, log into the parent website with your email address and parent password. Click on the Home tab near the top of the page. Scroll down and you will see the Recent Activity Report. This report contains a URL by URL report of your child’s activity within the KidZui browser. Locate the URL you wish to block and click on it. This will open a webpage details page on which you will see the a section located to bottom right that is title Manage. Click on Block and the specific URL will be inaccessible in the KidZui browser.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me directly by replying to this email or calling 888-KIDZUI-8 should you have any other questions or feedback.

Again, we sincerely apologize and greatly appreciate you bringing this to our attention.

Warm Regards,

Sean Dazet

We, my daughter and I signed up to review the new KidZui browser. KidZui bills itself as being a fun and safe browser specially made for children. My seven year old daughter and I explored the browser together and after a few weeks I/we offer my/our opinion.

The download was quick and simple and after my first glance at the User Interface, I was impressed. The steps to setting up an account were relatively easy. Creating a Zui proved a bit of a challenge because many of the options that my daughter wanted were “Premiums” and I had to keep explaining that we were not yet members and for now were just testing the product out.

Once inside the actual KidZui browser, the screen is filled with different tabs and options. It is a bit overwhelming and my daughter had a hard time figuring out what to do first. Together we choose the “Video” tab and were presented with different YouTube videos. Each of the YouTube vidoes can be rated with Tags, which are cute little graphics. Each Tag has a different opinion noted but again we ran into seeing Tags we could not use because we were not paid members.

It is not clear to me how the videos are selected to be included in the browser. Are the videos actually chosen by kids or are there a number of videos chosen by adults and the kids rate them. Not sure that it make a huge difference, but the marketing to children is a big concern to me. And I instantly see how this browser can be a huge marketing tool.

The next tab Alana wanted to see was within the “Video” tab and was dedicated to videos about animals. We both enjoyed this section. Seeing at this point, that for the most part the browser is quite benign, I left Alana to her own devices. I came back in about 10 minutes to check in on her and she had found games. She was playing POKER! It was at this point that I realized that the browser had an issue. What kind of kids browser would have a Poker game for kids?

Some of the other games available were great. Alana especially liked the games groupings called, Dress Up Games and Games for Girls. She actually spent most of her time during each log on between these two tabs.

Overall, the browser is beautiful, clear and fun. There are many useful features to take advantage of as a parent which help keep our children safe. Easy to read reports can be set to come weekly, daily or monthly to parents. However, some reporting features can not be accessed unless you are a paying member.

Sometimes the loading times can be long for videos. Membership costs, which is ok and better than advertising. I saw Google Ads in the browser but am not sure why.

My only objection to Kidzui is the Poker Game found in the puzzle game tab. This was the deal breaker for me. I did send a brief email explaining, that I thought the game was inappropriate.

Despite what I think, Alana loves the browser and feels a sense of maturity when she gets to use it. Kidzui is a great way to introduce your kids to the internet.
