Mis-Information???

“The most dangerous place for an African-American is in the womb.” Ouch it still stings! That is right folks, a group called Life Always, led by an African American, Pastor Stephen Broden, sponsored this huge billboard in Lower Manhattan. Is this what people really think of African-American women? Why are we under attack from African-American men? Is this true? Really? WTF?

I tried not to take this one personally and really thought about the intent behind such a statement and the billboard itself. Dismayed all day I searched for the truth about the statistics being quoted as the inspiration for such a statement being blown up all across NYC. I searched and what I found is this. While I wish this were a huge hoax, and while I know that the billboard was really inappropriate, there just might be some truth to the statement. Yuck! If this is true what does that really say about us?

I am so on the fence but there seems to be evidence supporting the statement. I am still searching. Before I cry foul, I want to be certain.

I really don’t see what all the hoopla is. There are stats to back up their claim. And it’s not a hateful or hurtful billboard. It’s not mean-spirited. It was just erected to shed light on what they deem is a worsening situation.

You must be Non-African American. I personally feel affronted. How many times has the African American community been used in divisive ways for political gain? How have these statistics been compiled? Where they gathered to prove a point or is there any truth to it? If the conversation needs to be had, is this the only way to get people’s attention for the conversation? I had heard the opinion that the most dangerous place for an African American was in the womb before but it fell from the mouths of Illuminati conspiracy theorists and was easily dismissed. If there is truth, then we need to do better. But if this a case where people are using scare tactics to gain political support (more likely) then the campaign is hurtful, untruthful and unfairly depicts African American women in a very sad light.

I am black. But I am all about self betterment. I don’t think we need to be so sensitive or have people tread so lightly about us. WE gotta fix us. So if this starts some dialogue then whoever put up the billboard has accomplished what they wanted to. Now as far as it being for political gain, I really can’t speak on that. I don’t know the motives of the organization that put it up.

I found the shock and awe of the ad so unnecessary. I also know that you always have two choices when you approach any situation in life, the high road or the low road (so to speak) and this group headed by a Pastor with political aspirations (he lost a bid for Congress in 2010) choose the low road. I look forward to a respectful engaging and difficult conversation. One that seeks truth and not just blame. There is plenty of that to go around….

Regardless if the stat is true or not, I can guarantee you that if it was a stat about caucasian abortions it wouldn’t have passed first draft.
I live in Canada. I have never seen anything like this and I would be appalled to see anything like this.
It doesn’t matter what colour the people are who get them. This is such an upsetting, underhanded attempt at attention grabbing..
and since it’s the second post I’ve seen about it in a week, I’d say it’s working.

Thanks for stopping by and I have to agree with you. Most abortions in the USA are performed on Caucasian women period. There has been no hoopla about that…
