Lot’s to think about from your video. I completely agree, with not getting tired of being with my kids. I love to be with my kids. That is why I left a job I LOVED as a school counselor, because I love my kids more. It was my personal choice, and not one that works for everyone. I think the most important thing is that people know themselves when making the decision of working or not, and what will work best for THEM and their family.

Home Schooling is one that I think is also a very personal choice. It is something people can be very passionate about on both sides. As a school counselor, I met with parents who home school their kids and would have them come to middle school for an art or foreign language class. I always thought it was nice that they got to experience some of both worlds. The only thing I always noticed was the kids did have a hard time assimilating to the environment, and getting to know the kids. This is something that I am sure can be worked out though with play dates, social situations etc.

Your words echoed a lot of my exact sentiments. I’m also doing “Camp Akilah” for my 5 and 3 year old daughters, and I also left my “9 to 5″ not just to be the type of mother that I wanted to be, but also to be the type of human being that I wanted to be — a writer, a traveler-at-will, and an unbought/unbossed free spirit. Plus, I want to be living proof to my daughters that they have the resources and the right to create the life they want and feed their own dreams, not just play a part in someone else fulfilment.

I’m also looking at home schooling as an option. My 5 year old starts public school in August, and I’m going to give it a try and see how it goes, but I have some materials in place in case the school isn’t up to par with her dad’s and my expectations.

Thanks for sharing your perspectives! It’s refreshing to stumble upon like-minded moms.

I agree that Black children have a hard time to go in our school systems. Generally, in our society they have a hard time, especially our boys. Our girls are constantly viewed as loud and mean. What makes it super hard for many is that unknowingly we have digested these concocted images of ourselves and in a true dysfunctional manner use them to define ourselves and our children. Homeschooling is an excellent tool in thwarting the negative emotional impact that public and private schools can have on our children. My question of myself is can I be organized enough, smart enough and mom enough to pull this “project” off well. I will check out your site I am sure you will lead me to other resources. Thank you for your support and for stopping by. Peace. Love. Light.

Why indeed. I have links on my site about homeschooling. I also have an unschooling blog
http://www.luvnharmony.wordpress.com

Kids get socialized through everyday normal, natural activities. School is an artificial setting. Everyone is with their age group. That’s not how it works in the real world. You don’t only hang out or work with people in your age group.

I think it’s best for our black children to be homeschooled. The public school system has it out for our kids before they even get a chance to know them.

I agree…Next summer we will do camp for a few weeks. Still up in the air about homeschooling. It is a HUGE commitment. Thanks for weighing in!

There we go. Great video my friend. I don’t have a problem with homeschooling except for getting the kids out and letting them socialize with their friends. I think that’s a great part of their upbringing. As long as that part of the equation is taken care of it’s a win win situation. I also would let me kids go to a camp for a while…let them experience different things. You don’t want to take up all their time while growing up. Yes they are our kids and the more time they are with us the better it is, but they also need friends and to experience all aspects of life. Enjoyed this :) Aloha
